Many people struggle to get a good quality abaya( black Islamic gown) and want to know where people get it from. Some people order their relatives or friends to get one for them while travelling to Mecca for umrah or hajj.
Abaya is a very comfortable dress which covers women’s body parts and clothing under it. It is mandatory for Saudi residence women. We always give tips to pilgrims who we know, to wear the abaya when they come for Hajj and Umrah, we gift them one, so they continue to wear in their country too.I request you all, please send them with abayas or give them the advice to wear it.
How to dress up in Holy Places
In Islam, a woman’s dress has to serve certain purposes of which is the protection of her honour and integrity. Islam requires Muslim women to maintain their cultural identity and not to imitate the manners of non-Muslim women in dress etc.
It’s is the fact that many Pakistnies or arab men don’t wear shalwar kameez or thob(arab men dressing) in western countries and women try to wear like westerns, but strangely they don’t think about it when they visit holiest places where there are Muslims from all around the world and majority of them are men!
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallalaahu alaihi wasallam) said:
“When a woman reaches puberty no part of her body should remain uncovered except her face and the hand up to the wrist joint.” (Abu Dawud)
It is very shameful when especially Pakistani ladies don’t wear, and their shirts flow with air here and there, and ankles show through shalwar or dresses revealing their body parts (lawn suits). Their body curves show.
Muslim women should not wear such clothes that reveal the curves and shape of their body, and should not wear thin transparent (see-through) clothing.
Furthur, when they sit or sleep on the floor in Al-Haram (which unfortunately many Pakistani people always does), those dresses don’t cover their body of course, and it shows their body through it.
I am pointing fingers on just Pakistanis because they do this, even Bangladeshis and Indians wear proper abayas and head gear, but the majority of Pakistani people come in just shalwar kameez, to be honest! Sometimes I feel like to say the Pakistani government to take a step and make it mandatory for any pilgrims to wear abayas and head gear like how Indonesians and other government did. Seriously, it makes this nation so uneducated and unethical. If we say them to wear the abaya, they reply we feel suffocation in it!
Some of them are nice and understand that they just need guiding only and they follow it Mashallah. Recently, I suggest one lady who wanted to do ietkaf in Haram Makki. She wore it, and when she came back, she was gratified and said that it was too comfortable that I could offer things (prayers, wudu, sleep, etc.) very easily otherwise I had to cover my ankles with trousers or socks and arms with sleeves, etc. So many people are unaware even if they are educated they just need a correct guideline politely.
Let’s return to the topic.
There are four main categories of abayas which I am aware of.
Khimar is typical Islamic abaya which is right according to Quran and hadith. Many Saudi ladies still wear it nowadays too and direct others to buy too.
It is plain Black abaya with no any stones or design, no arms and shoulder cutting and ladies put it on their head.
Mishalah abaya is kind of Khimar, but it has all kind of stone, beading, flowers, gold/silver embroidery stitched onto it. It also doesn’t have arms cutting.
Usually, it has work on sleeves, and some of it has work on front and back side too.
It is tight from up and has flairs from down like that is why it is called umbrella.
There is one more hadith regarding nowadays fashion on plait heads I wanted to share
The Holy Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said:
“Those women who seem naked even when dressed and those who walk flirtingly and those who plait their heads like the humps of camels, thus inviting people’s attention, will not enter Paradise nor will they smell its fragrance even though its fragrance can be smelt from a very far distance.? (Muslim)
Now I will inform you nice abaya shops in Mecca, Madinah and Jeddah. I will classify it by price range from cheap to expensive. So let’s start
Shirka Makkah is very close to grand mosque Al-Ahram. Usually, Pilgrims buy from there. Here you will find any type of abaya but old fashion and not very good quality. Mostly, colourful beads, crystal, stonework, embroidery and so on. Remember that with every wash Beads, and some crystals get lost or lose their colours.
You will find abayas everywhere in any plazas. All plazas have corner specially for abayas.
Famous Plazas are Bawarith, Family Mall in Al-Aziziya in Mecca.
Almansoor street and Al-Rusaifah
Almansoor street has shops of abayas. You will be able to find any type of and very near to Al-Mansoor street is Al-Rusaifah.
Al-Rusaifah Mall is an old mall, especially for abayas and party gowns. A worth visiting if you want a new design of abayas, you will not come back with empty hands. They have all kind of design and nice stuff with reasonable price. Price starts from 100 to 400 Riyals. If you don’t get your size in desired designs, or you want some changes, you can get it stitched as they offer custom made too, and you can be haggled them down too 😉
NO NAME بدون اسم , Bo knan بو كنان,First Choice ،سيدتي الجميلة are famous brands of abayas here in Saudi which you can find in any Saudi malls. They use high-quality stuff, and their work is elegant. However, we all know brands are always expensive. Price start from 400sr.
Online Abaya shops:
Internet shopping is very convenient and popular nowadays. It saves much time. You can have all designs in just one click. You need to have much knowledge of good online stores who are very responsive too. I didn’t have the experience to buy from them but here are some stores.
Online Abaya etc
You can try Instagram for designer abayas. Nowadays Saudi ladies use Instagram for their business and Instagram is a business hub for them. There are lots of designers, and some are very famous. They offer high-quality abayas. You only need hashtag in search bar #Abaya #عبایہ
Balad is an ancient and historic place of Jeddah. If you ever happen to visit Jeddah, you must go to this place. In Ramadan, it’s more lively; they decorate it with lots of lighting, fun fair, bazaars & stalls, etc.
They have abaya shops too behind of Queen Building near the Gold market.
It’s like Al-Rusaifah mall in Mecca, with lots of Abaya shops from cheap to expensive. All kind of designs and stuff. They also offer custom made; you can bargain with them too.
I noticed few signs of expensive shops that are as follows
1. Golden Lights
2. Saudi or Arab shopkeeper
3. Shops are in front of the road or market.
Al Taibah Market
It’s like Shirka Makkah near Al-Haram. Taibah market is also near Masjid al-Nabi(s.w.s). They have not very high-quality abayas, and design is also not up to date. However, there is Al-Sharqiah shop which I heard have nice abayas.
Souq Al-Qubah & Souq Al-Bilal
It’s is like Al-Rusaifah in Macca and Souq Al-Sharq in Jeddah.
Apart from that, You can find branded abayas in any mall in Al- Madinah too. Famous Al-Madinah malls are Al-Rashid, Al-Dakheel, and Al-Noor malls.
In my opinion, don’t buy too cheap or too expensive that you spend all your fortune on it. Nice abaya comes around 150 to 350 Riyals, don’t spend more than 400 Riyals on it.
Do you know that…
The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Males should use that perfume which does not give colour but has a strong smell, and the females should use that perfume which gives colour but has a light smell.” (Abu Dawud)
A perfumed woman may not leave her home unless she got rid of the smell of the perfume. If not-mahram can smell her perfume, she will be counted as Al-Zaniah!!! Astagfirullah
